Online Book of Condolence for Pope Francis

As the faithful around the world mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to share your prayers, comments, and memories in our Online Book of Condolence. A Pope of the people, Pope Francis inspired millions with his humility, compassion, and tireless devotion. As the first Pontiff from the Americas, he brought fresh insight to the papacy, rooted in mercy, justice, and the embrace of the marginalized.

In tribute to his extraordinary life and ministry, Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, shared: “We give thanks to God for his 55 years as a priest, his 32 years as a bishop, and 12 years as Pope. A life of service to the Church and to God’s people, we remember him and strive to ‘go out to proclaim the merciful embrace of the Father’ as he urged in his 2015 homily at the Basilica. May he rest in peace and Our Lady usher him into the presence of her Son.”

I’ve lost my very best friend. Dear Pope Francis your humility and simplicity but merciful message to all transcended religions and spoke to humanity. You articulated what Jesus wants for the world. Peace and humility, forgiveness and love for our fellow human being. We never met but you became a cornerstone of my life…. And that you will remain. God bless you and speed you to heaven.

Thank you for your service to people throughout the world. You were the epitome of putting yourself in service to God first. As a new Catholic I learned a lot from your actions about what being a Catholic.

I pray for Pope Francis, that his mission here on earth has led him into eternal life with our Heavenly Father. I am truly blessed to have had a Holy Father like Pope Francis in my lifetime. Someone who truly lived what he taught me to be loving and compassionate Catholic. Thank you Pope Francis.

I will forever have a mystical mysterious connection to Pope Francis because 1) Immediately after attending Mass at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy-he was elected Pope Francis-bells rang out in St Mark’s Square in Venezia, what joyful memories 2) On his declaration of the year of Mercy, my birthday fell on the feast of Divine Mercy upon Pope Francis declaring that year of Mercy and I shared his devotion to the poor inspired by St Anthony of Padua 3) I shared a special devotion with Pope Francis of the Salus Popoli Romani icon (health of the Roman people) painting by St Luke at my daily or frequent 6pm rosary visits to Santa Maria Majorie (St Mary Major) Basilica while living in Rome. May the Blessed Virgin Mary greet our Holy Father Pope Francis with a smile and peace. Sincerely, Marc Anthony Bennett

As the priests in the temple felt about Jesus, many met the election of Pope Francis with dislike, wanting a hard line Pope. What those people forget is to trust that the Holy Spirit determines the election and gives us what we need. It is not for the Pope to meet our expectations, but for us to be recalled to simple faith and learn from the Pope chosen by the Holy Spirit. If we have no faith in the choice of God, then we are not truly following Christ, but our own judgment.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
I pray for the peaceful repose of Pope Francis' soul. I deeply respected the sincerity of his mission and the good he sought to do as he shepherded with fidelity those entrusted to his care. His commitment to humility, his care for the poor and forgotten, and his example of living simply in a complex world will remain an enduring light.

May God reward him for his faithful service and welcome him into eternal joy.

Requiescat in pace, Holy Father.

Light a Candle for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis

As we mourn the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, we invite you to honor his life, legacy and unwavering devotion to Christ by lighting a candle at Mary’s Shrine. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis led the faithful with a heart of compassion, welcoming the marginalized and underprivileged with open arms. Your candle, lit in prayerful remembrance, will burn alongside hundreds of others in chapels and oratories throughout the upper and lower Church of the National Shrine.
